Why Is Everyone So Hyped About Ashwagandha?

//Why Is Everyone So Hyped About Ashwagandha?

We all have that friend who takes 10 vitamins every day and adds a bunch of different mystery powders into her smoothie. (Cue eye roll.) But there’s one buzzy supplement out there right now that might actually be pretty legit. It’s called ashwagandha—and it actually has been used for more than 3,000 years.

The plant, also called “Indian ginseng” or “Indian winter cherry,” is now most commonly found in the form of a capsule, pill, powder, or blend, according to Alex Caspero, R.D. The Ayurvedic staple has been used to do everything from fight stress to manage pain.

But despite these major ashwagandha benefits, it isn’t for everyone. According to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, it may cause miscarriage, so if you’re pregnant or nursing, steer clear.

“As with all supplements, they can have a pharmacological effect, so it’s a good idea to discuss supplements with your doctor before taking,” Caspero says.

There are actually six research-backed reasons why you might try adding ashwagandha to your daily routine—after getting the green light from your doctor.

1. It Will Help You Chill—For Real

small study from 2012 found that people who took ashwagandha supplements had reduced cortisol levels (the hormone produced in reaction to stress). And another small study from the Indian Journal of Psychiatry found 88 percent of volunteers experienced reduced anxiety while taking ashwaganda, while only half from the placebo group had any relief.

2. It Might Help Crush Cancer

Ashwagandha appears to be a promising cancer fighter, too. According to a 2010 study, the plant can kill certain cancer cells. Some research suggests that ashwagandha supplements can help fight cancer alongside other treatments like chemo and radiation. It has also been shown to strengthen the immune system of patients undergoing chemotherapy by increasing white blood cell count.

3. It Could Light Up Your Sex Life

If you’re having trouble getting turned on (or hitting that big O), good news: There is some promising evidence that ashwagandha can help with female sexual dysfunction. According to a small 2015 study, women who took concentrated oral doses of ashwagandha reported having more orgasms and overall more satisfying sex—likely due to the supplement’s stress-reducing effects.

4. It Will Fight Those Annoying Grays

A few studies have found that consuming a daily dose of ashwagandha powder helped increase hair melanin production. Fewer grays? Yes, way.

5. It Might Actually Make You Look Younger

A 2016 study found that the ashwagandha root extract is packed with powerful antioxidants like polyphenols, which can reduce free radicals in the body and slows down signs of aging.

6. It Might Help Your Old-Lady Knee Pain

Due to its high withanolide content (which acts like a steroid), ashwagandha can help soothe joint pain and swelling associated with arthritis, according to a small study from the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine.

What's the REAL problem with Ashwagandha?

Eventhough Ashwagandha comes with a laundry list of incredible health benefits:

It has *one major flaw*.
